Default Bag on Craigslist

Is this a prototype or something? Jim states in a FAQ that there were no early gray F2s, however here one is. Is it possible that it's real? I already bought one bag from this seller and it was authentic. Thanks!

They're wrong about it being an "early" F2; back in the early '90s Domke had various bags available in grey (I have an F1x from that era) though, and they recently had a limited run of at least the F2 and F3 in grey.

It's not an early F2, because the strap fittings are black plastic and it has "DOMKE" tape on the end pockets. My original F2 (dating to the early '80s) has stainless sliders and doesn't have the Domke tape on the end pockets. My grey F1x has the "DOMKE" on the end pockets in black tape with red lettering, and has black webbing and edging tape. I'm a little surprised to see sand webbing and edging tape and sand/brown label tape on that; it might be a very early production example of the grey F2, I suppose. The "Limited Edition" F2 and F3x, from around 2009 I think, also had black edging and webbing, and the balck/red DOMKE tape on the end pockets.

One more question.

The sand F3 I bought from him has black velcro on it in all three flaps. I have seen sand bags with sand velcro. Was it just willy nilly what color they used? This one has the plastic sliders and the one metal front hook in the center with the DOMKE tape on the end flaps and it's the kind that says "The Rugged Professional" underneath the logo. Would this bag be from the early nineties too?

Thanks

I don' t think I've ever seen a tan, blue, green (not olive; they made a green one late '80s-early '90s) or brown Domke with anything but tan Velcro or tan/brown marking tape. The olive had matching olive Velcro, and grey and black were the only ones that have had black Velcro or the black/red DOMKE. I couldn't tell you offhand whether all the end tapes said "The Rugged Professional" under the DOMKE. I'd have to look when I got home.

With all these oddities coming up, are the zippers made by YKK? Do the bags have "Made in U.S.A." tags inside? If the answers are "No", he have counterfeit bags. That would sort of line up with the "wrong" colour of edging and branding tapes.

I do know that Domke, Saunders, and most recently Tiffen would contract out batches of each bag style to be made. It's possible that one of the makers would run out of the "correct" DOMKE tape, edging, or whatever and use what they did have on hand, but I'd think it unlikely they'd run out of so many key components in the appropriate colour.

I did uncover a scan I made of a 1990 Domke (Saunders) brochure. At the time the available colours were given as black with black trim, grey with black trim, sand with sand trim and navy with sand trim. A close-up on the cover shows the DOMKE label to not have any other lettering on it (it was of a grey bag with black trim and the black/red DOMKE)..

The bag does have YKK zippers and instead of a made in the USA tag with a flag on it, inside it has a "crafted with pride in the usa" tag with a red and blue star made out of lines (3 red and one blue line) on each point. There is also a silver snap on the front of the bag which says DOMKE on it.

A round dot-type snap? Haven't seen them on any of my bags that I recall. I also haven't got an example (I just looked) of a Domke bag that has anything other than a solid bar under the "DOMKE". That covers F1, F2, F-2 Backpack, F3x, F5a,b, F6, F7, F802, F-804, F-901, F-902 and F-945 of various ages and colours. The "Made in USA" tags varied; "Crafted with pride in the USA", in two different sizes, is on my grey F-1x and my navy F-2, both from the mid-late '80s to early '90s period.

Okay, here are the images of the bag I bought from Craigslist. Hopefully they are enough for someone to authenticate with. Thanks again.
