Those lucky enough to attend the Steadicam Gold Workshop were treated with the stellar training of lead instructor, Jerry Holway. An accomplished Operator, Holway has been a leader in Steadicam operation, providing invaluable training materials and workshops for decades. Together with inventor Garrett Brown, his insights have been instrumental in evolving the techniques and technology—all the while sharing his extensive knowledge with generations of great Steadicam Ops.
With help from stabilizer specialists Tyson Galland, David Svenson, Bryan Fowler and Nic Somera, the training team dug into the 5 1/2-day, all-encompassing Steadicam learning experience that 16 operators from the US, Canada, Mexico, Bosnia and China—signed up to attend. They were not disappointed.
This hands-on course allowed participants to build their operating skills with top rigs including Steadicam M-2, M-1 and the Volt, while being taught by the best. The curriculum was thorough: from basic operating techniques to on-set preparation and practical realities, to tips about the gear, building shots and complex techniques—all raising the professional finesse of each student.
Even evenings were filled with after-dinner sessions, screenings, lectures, critiques, and stories, including a zoom visit from Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown. At the course finale, each participant took home a Steadicam Gold Workshop Certificate of Completion and a Steadicam Operator's Handbook.
