The Tiffen Variable ND filter is a unique, versatile and flexible tool, affording you the convenience of using several Neutral Density filters all in one.  Primarily used as a photographic tool for controlling depth of field and exposure, the Variable ND is being sought in the video market as well because it is fast, easy to use, small, lightweight, and does not require additional accessories such as a matte box.

The Tiffen Variable ND filter operates on the same principle as a Circular Polarizer – rotate until you reach your desired effect and shoot. It allows you to have continuous control over the amount of light coming through your lens in an approximate range of 2 (ND 0.6) to 8 (ND 2.4) stops – while maintaining the integrity of your image. Note: The evenly spaced indexing marks between MIN and MAX do not represent calibrated stops. They are for reference only, to be used as a density bench-mark to return to a previous setting.

  • Provides 2 to 8 stops of light control
  • Thin profile ring – 9mm
  • Wider outer optic to help reduce vignetting at wide angles
  • Comes in Tiffen Professional packaging with padded black nylon pouch
  • Made with high quality optical glass using Tiffen’s ColorCore® technology
  • Made in the USA
  • 10-year warranty

Don’t know how i ever lived without it

Been using this for a couple months now and I honestly can’t remember how I ever got a shot without it. I guess I just missed a lot of shots all the time tinkering with multiple filters.

severe color cast

I've choosen Tiffen for my Vari ND since I wanted good quality but I'm fairly disappointed with it, after two year of use First, lack of hard stops makes it very hard, for run n gun shots, to avoid going accidentlly too far and getting an awful blue cast during the shot second, the ND has a very strong greenish and brownish color cast that had been confirm with several professionnal TV colorists I've worked with. I've written to Tiffen with test shots as exemple and they could never tell me if the filter was a bad unit or else Hence, I really don't recommend it.

Variable ND filter

I was extremely excited about your variable ND filter, but after using it several different times I'm consistently getting dark spots in every picture

This sounds like you are experiencing the "X Bar Effect" which is mentioned in the VND User Guide that came with your filter. VND filters consist of two circular polarizing filters, when you have the VND density setting too dark and are shooting at wide focal lengths due to the optical physics of cross polarization you will see a dark blobby "x" in your image. To eliminate this from your images, zoom in, lighten the density setting on your VND filter or a combination of both until it disappears.
