The Tiffen 6.6 x 6.6" Full Spectrum Water White Glass NATural IRND Filter is a neutral density filter with a 2x filter factor that provides a 1-stop exposure reduction. Its density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters are intended to not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times.

This Tiffen 6.6 x 6.6" Full Spectrum Water White Glass NATural IRND  Filter is constructed from Water White glass for increased clarity as well as color fidelity. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. It measures 4mm thick.

What is it?

The Tiffen NATural ND filters are the pinnacle of neutral density technology that began developing with the advent of digital sensors for photography and video capture. They were designed to address the most common issues that cinematographers and photographers face with other ND filters: color shift, IR contamination, full spectrum light coverage, longevity, and durability.

The NATural NDs maintain the most neutral colors, even at higher stops, to make sure the images you create match the images you see with your own eyes. Lots of NDs shift images by adding green, gray or blue tints, but the NATural NDs allow you to capture exactly what is in front of the camera.
Modern digital sensors are calibrated to capture a full spectrum of light, including a balance of IR and UV light that gives rich red tones and a balanced image. By blocking light in a full spectrum manner, blocking IR, UV and visible light evenly, the NATural ND filters maintain a harmony that allows the sensor to create a full and beautiful image. IR contamination is caused by an imbalance between visible light blockage and IR light, which is very common with older ND technology and avoided by using NATural NDs.

Older IRND filter technology has been shown to have some issues with consistency after extended use. Tiffen’s unique dual-layer system for reflecting IR light while absorbing visible and UV light assures that these filters will maintain their effectiveness and color neutrality for many years to come. This is especially important for customers renting filters and using multiple cameras as NATural ND filters will be the best bet for making sure all cameras are matching and reduce post production work of balancing image color shifts.

The NATural ND filters use Tiffen’s award-winning ColorCore® process for creating filters that last. By laminating the filter effect between two pieces of Water White glass, the NATural NDs have an effect that won’t scratch off or be damaged by regular day-to-day use. It also means that Tiffen filters can be resurfaced in the case they do get scratched and the effect will remain untouched and intact.

These filters have a unique bronzed look to them which comes from the dual-layer ND element. Because one of the elements is designed to reflect away IR light, the filters appear to have this brownish-red color. In fact, that color will have no impact on the image as it is being reflected away before the light can pass through and reach the lens. So far, this is the only way to assure that an ND will create a clear, neutral image and last for years and years.
